A desperate woman comes into a police station with her 15-year-old son and says she wants to hand him in. The officers did not know what to do because they had never been in such a weird situation.<\/p>\n

The police officers on duty that night at a Newark police station were stunned when a harried-looking woman in her late thirties walked in, literally dragging a scruffy teen by the arm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cLet go\u2026\u201d the kid who looked about 14 whined, tugging at the woman\u2019s arm, but she dragged him right up to the sergeant\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOfficer,\u201d she said in a trembling voice. \u201cYou have to help me. I can\u2019t keep him anymore, please, you have to take him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The sergeant\u2019s mouth hung open. After twenty years on the force, he believed he\u2019d heard everything, but this was a first. \u201cMa\u2019am,\u201d he said, \u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cMy son,\u201d the woman said with tears in her eyes, \u201cI can\u2019t have in my house anymore. Please, you have to take him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am,\u201d the sergeant protested, \u201cwe can only \u2018take\u2019 people who\u2019ve committed crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cHe\u2019s going to,\u201d the woman cried desperately. \u201cCan\u2019t you see that?\u201d The boy who\u2019d been listening to his mother with a sneer on his face laughed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYou\u2019re such a loser,\u201d he said. \u201cThey can\u2019t do ANYTHING to me! I\u2019m a minor.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s been stealing,\u201d said the mother. \u201cI know that, and this afternoon\u2026 He pulled out a knife!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cA knife?\u201d asked the sergeant. \u201cWhat kind of a knife?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cA big knife, my husband\u2019s K-Bar,\u201d the mother explained. \u201cI told him to clean his room, and he took out the knife.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t do nothing!\u201d the kid sneered. \u201cI didn\u2019t threaten her, I just showed her what I had in my jacket pocket!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The sergeant nodded. \u201cThat\u2019s different, Ma\u2019am,\u201d he said crisply. \u201cThat\u2019s carrying a concealed weapon, and THAT\u2019S a crime.\u201d Before long, the desperate mother, Mary Trenton, was sitting with a police officer, telling her story.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sometimes grief and anger can make us act out and hurt those around us.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMy husband passed away a year ago. He was a Marine,\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd that\u2019s when Donny started acting up. He started staying out late, hanging out with some older boys.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThen he started skipping school. I found some expensive things in his room, things we could never afford and he said a friend gave it to him.\u201d Mary was crying. \u201cI didn\u2019t know what to do!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI tried a curfew, but he just ignored it. This morning he pulled out that knife. My daughter Rita is just eight and she was frightened.\u201d Mary cried, \u201cHe was such a sweet boy, but now I don\u2019t know what to do! I have to work two jobs now, and I know he probably needs me there more, I know he\u2019s in pain, but I can\u2019t handle it!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The police officer listened to what Mary had to say. \u201cI have an idea,\u201d he said. Then he got up and made a phone call. Two hours later, a belligerent-looking Donny was sitting opposite the officer and a man who identified himself as a social worker.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cNow Donny,\u201d said the officer calmly. \u201cWe\u2019ve been talking to your mother, and we have a proposition for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOh yeah?\u201d asked Donny, leaning back and crossing his arms. \u201cAnd what\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWell, Donny,\u201d said the officer smoothly. \u201cWe can charge you with carrying a concealed weapon and you go to juvie, or you do six months community service.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d gasped Donny. \u201cYou\u2019re nuts!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWhat I was thinking,\u201d interrupted the social worker, \u201cis that you\u2019d work at a children\u2019s group shelter every day after school, help the smaller kids with homework, with their chores, whatever they need.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cNo way!\u201d cried Donny. \u201cThat\u2019s when I hang out with my friends!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cNot anymore,\u201d said the police officer. \u201cNow you hang out with the kiddies, and then you go home to your mother and sister and you treat them right.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t MAKE me!\u201d cried Donny, and he didn\u2019t sound so mean and streetwise anymore. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t do that if my dad was alive!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI know you\u2019re hurting, Donny,\u201d said the social worker gently. \u201cBut maybe helping others will help you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The next day, Donny was at the shelter. The kids were so small! Most of them were eight or nine, and the smallest was just six. The littlest kid, Ben, didn\u2019t talk. He mostly sat in corners and watched everyone around him with frightened eyes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong with him?\u201d Donny asked one of the women who worked at the shelter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The woman shook her head sadly. \u201cBen\u2019s father died and he has learned that the world is cruel. He\u2019s afraid of everything. We\u2019ve tried, but we can\u2019t get through to him. Not yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Donny started watching Ben, and one afternoon he brought him a little fire engine. \u201cHey,\u201d he said casually, \u201cI thought you might like this.\u201d Ben took the fire engine and looked up at Donny suspiciously.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s OK,\u201d Donny said. \u201cYou can have it. My dad gave it to me. Did I tell you I used to be really scared of the dark? My dad said that the truck was magic and I guess it was, \u2019cause I\u2019m not scared anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ben turned the bright little fire truck over in his tiny fingers, then he looked up at Donny again, but he didn\u2019t say a word. Every afternoon Donny would talk to Ben, telling him stories about his childhood, about fishing with his dad, all the things they did together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ben never said anything but he listened. One day he spoke. \u201cWhere\u2019s your daddy?\u201d he asked Donny in a soft voice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Donny swallowed a lump in his throat. \u201cMy daddy was a soldier, a Marine. He\u2019s gone to heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cMy daddy too,\u201d Ben said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t want me. Didn\u2019t your daddy want you either?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Donny put his arms around Ben and hugged him. \u201cYes he did, Ben, he wanted me and my mom and my sister and he loved us. But sometimes a daddy has to go even though they don\u2019t want to and we need them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s never coming back,\u201d Ben whispered. \u201cI heard them say. Never ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That night Donny went home and hugged his mother. He couldn\u2019t believe how badly he\u2019d been behaving. Little Ben\u2019s plight had made him realize how lucky he was. He spoke to the manager of the shelter, then to his mom, and he took Ben home for Sunday lunch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Once his \u2018community service\u2019 stint at the shelter was through, Donny found himself an afternoon job at a local store so he could help his mother, and every other day he visited Ben.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
