On April 3, 2025, at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Tom Cruise paid a heartfelt homage to his\u00a0\u201cTop Gun\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>co-star Val Kilmer, two days after Kilmer died of pneumonia at the age of 65.<\/p>\n

Cruise urged the crowd to pause and\u00a0remember Kilmer<\/a>\u00a0while promoting\u00a0\u201cMission: Impossible \u2013 The Final Reckoning\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0at Caesars Palace. He described Kilmer as a man who loved movies and offered a great deal to the film business and people around him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Cruise stated.\u00a0\u201cI can\u2019t tell you how much I admire his work, how grateful and honored I was when he joined \u2018Top Gun\u2019 and came back later for \u2018Top Gun: Maverick.\u2019\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0The homage concluded with his words,\u00a0\u201cI wish you well on the next journey.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In response, the crowded auditorium fell silent for a minute, silently paying tribute to Kilmer.<\/p>\n

Cruise and Kilmer played competing fighter pilots Maverick and Iceman in the 1986 action film, which was their debut appearance together. The movie became the highest-grossing release of the year with $350 million worldwide.<\/p>\n

They appeared on screen together again in the 2022 sequel, which was Kilmer\u2019s last on-screen appearance, almost forty years later.<\/p>\n

In a 2013 interview with Larry King, Kilmer reflected on working with Cruise during the original production. He\u00a0said<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cThat was a lot of fun. It was a great camaraderie in the film and of course, you know, two of the three. I would say Tom is the\u2026 you know, ended up being the glue to the project. You know, he wasn\u2019t that superstar yet\u2026[sic]\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

When King asked if he liked working with Cruise, Kilmer\u00a0replied<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cYeah. It was fun. You know, hard worker. My guy didn\u2019t like him, but you know, it was fun to not like him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1986, Kilmer also\u00a0spoke about the strength<\/a>\u00a0of the creative team behind the film,\u00a0\u201cI think the actors and the direction and the producing. It was a really good group, and they worked together very well and you can tell when something works or it doesn\u2019t, when you\u2019re doing it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Decades later, Cruise\u00a0shared<\/a>\u00a0how strongly he advocated for Kilmer to be in the original film,\u00a0\u201cYou know, in the first one, I really rallied hard for him to make the movie because I wanted him in the film. He\u2019s such a tremendous actor. I was like, you just gotta go and tackle this guy, \u2019cause I was like, \u2018Val, you gotta make this movie, you\u2019re gonna be amazing.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the sequel, Iceman supported Maverick at a pivotal moment. He explained that he fought to keep Maverick in the Navy because he believed Maverick was still needed. Reflecting on the scene, Cruise\u00a0said<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cAnd a kind of talent that he has, and you see that scene, it\u2019s very special. It\u2019s just very special.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cruise\u2019s moving remembrance of Kilmer comes after singer Cher and actress Michelle Pfeiffer both sent touching messages.<\/p>\n

On April 2, Pfeiffer paid tribute to him in a post on her official Instagram Stories. The black-and-white image Pfeiffer posted was from their 1985 collaboration on the\u00a0ABC Afterschool Specials show<\/a>\u00a0\u201cOne Too Many.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The former\u00a0\u201cLadyhawke\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0star may be seen\u00a0in the picture<\/a>\u00a0resting next to Kilmer on her side. She is putting her arm lightly over his shoulder and grinning at him.<\/p>\n

In his 2020 memoir,\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m Your Huckleberry,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Kilmer talked about the relationship he developed with Pfeiffer while they were coworkers.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0wrote<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cthat Michelle and I shared created an intimacy between us. She had no one else to talk to about Peter; I had no one else to talk to about my parents. Plus, I had an all-consuming crush on Michelle\u2019s younger sis [sic]\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a November 16, 2018,\u00a0Facebook post<\/a>, Kilmer also recalled the period with fondness. He wrote that he had met Pfeiffer thanks to her ex-husband, Peter Horton, and actress Mare Winningham, whom Kilmer referred to as his first girlfriend in high school.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0\u201cOne Too Many\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as a\u00a0\u201cmorality play\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0intended to educate young audiences, highlighting the exceptional experience of collaborating with all three on the same production.<\/p>\n

In her social media post, the singer\u00a0wrote<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cVALUS Will miss u, U Were Funny, crazy, pain in the ass, GREAT FRIEND, kids\"\ud83d\udc9c\"U, BRILLIANT as Mark Twain, BRAVE here during ur sickness [sic].\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0She affectionately referred to him as\u00a0\u201cValus,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0a nickname from their time together.<\/p>\n

The two developed a deep and lasting friendship after their romantic relationship ended, one that persisted for more than 40 years. In a past interview, she expressed deep fondness for many of her former partners, like Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman. But about Kilmer, she\u00a0admitted<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cWhen we kissed, I thought my head would shoot right off my body.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

They first crossed paths at a birthday celebration thrown by one of Cher\u2019s pals in the early 1980s. Despite their different ages\u2014she was in her 30s and Kilmer was in his early 20s\u2014the two hit it off right away because they had similar senses of humor and inventiveness.<\/p>\n

She once said they were just friends at first who laughed constantly, but that soon turned into a romance. In a 2021 People\u00a0interview<\/a>, the singer reflected on their unique connection,\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s like nobody I\u2019ve ever known. He is exasperating and hysterical. Thrilling and funny, and doesn\u2019t do what anyone else does.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

On\u00a0\u201cThe Howard Stern Show,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in 2024, Cher was asked what kind of man would ever abandon her.\u00a0\u201cA couple of men, including Kilmer,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>she said bluntly. She reiterated that she was\u00a0\u201cmadly in love\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0with him, as she had in previous interviews, but their relationship ended.<\/p>\n

When the talk show host pressed further, she\u00a0explained<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cSometimes you\u2019re only meant to stay with someone so long,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0adding that Kilmer was very young during their time together.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the actor and singer remained close friends. She also stayed by his side during his illness, visiting him at her house and seeing personally the bravery he displayed in the face of severe health problems.
