On Monday, December 23, 2024, the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf suffered a dramatic partial collapse, sending a significant portion of the structure into the ocean. The incident occurred at approximately 12:44 p.m., destroying roughly 150 feet of the wharf.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The affected area included the Dolphin Restaurant, a restroom facility, and surrounding sections. This disaster unfolded amid a $4 million repair project intended to address damage from prior winter storms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Santa Cruz police confirmed that three individuals were on the wharf when it gave way. Two were rescued from the water by emergency responders, while the third managed to escape without assistance. Although only minor injuries were reported, the collapse prompted the immediate evacuation of the entire wharf for safety reasons.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe had our engineer, our engineering team and our wharf crew on-site monitoring minute by minute,\u201d\u00a0explained<\/a>\u00a0Matt Huffaker, a city official. \u201cWe made the decision that based on our forecasting models, it would be safe to do so today with constant monitoring.\u201d However, despite these precautions, the structural failure highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by extreme weather and the aging infrastructure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The collapse also resulted in additional damage. A crane and a skid steer, both vital pieces of equipment for the repair project, plunged into the ocean alongside debris from the restroom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Much of the wreckage, including parts of the collapsed bathrooms, washed ashore on nearby Seabright Beach. Witnesses described the moments leading up to the collapse, with onlooker Landon Ky\u00a0recalling,<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe hear the pier cracking, and it was swinging a lot. So my friend actually noticed that, but we kind of waved it off, and then probably within the next five minutes, the whole thing crashed into the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In response to the incident, the city closed the Santa Cruz Harbor indefinitely, citing extensive storm surge damage. Main Beach and Cowell\u2019s Beach were also declared off-limits, while the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk suspended operations for the rest of the day out of caution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Officials warned that access to landside businesses in the area would be restricted, with parking significantly impacted by the ongoing recovery efforts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

With more severe weather forecasted, officials anticipate additional damage to the already fragile wharf.
